Further details about the young star’s death are being withheld because sharing them would be “highly offensive” and “not of legitimate concern to the public and therefore would violate the right to privacy”, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office told the publication.
In a previous statement to TMZKailia’s mother Marcy Posey Gatterman confirmed the teenager had taken her own life just days after celebrating her high school prom.
Kailia was found dead on May 2, just two weeks after turning 16.
Washington State Patrol officer Jacob Kennett told PEOPLE police were called about 1.26pm on May 2 to investigate a death involving a minor at Birch Bay State Park.
“Although she was an accomplished teenager with a bright future ahead of her, unfortunately in one impetuous moment, she made the rash decision to end her earthly life,” her mother’s statement to TMZ read.
In an earlier Facebook post announcing her daughter’s death, Marcy wrote: “I don’t have any words or thoughts. A beautiful baby girl is gone.”
In a second social media post mourning her loss, Marcy added: “I still have no words.
“I thank everyone for their kind words. I miss my baby girl so much that it doesn’t feel real.
“I keep waiting for her to walk through the door and yell my name Mom mom. My baby!!”
Kailia was best known for being featured in one episode of Toddlers & Tiarasa reality TV series that focused on the families of children who competed in beauty pageant competitions.
She became one of the most recognisable faces in the series after her cheeky grin during a 2012 segment was turned into a hugely popular meme.
Her family has now set up a Kailia Posey Teen Crisis Intervention Fund which aims to raise money for “students in crisis”.
Kailia began competing in pageants at three years old and continued to do so through her childhood and adolescent years.
In her statement to TMZ, Marcy wrote that her daughter “won countless crowns & trophies after competing on the pageant circuit her entire life”.
The 16-year-old was a student at Lynden High School in Washington.
“Her highly acclaimed talent as a contortionist had already led to professional touring job offers, and she had recently been selected to be a cheerleader at her high school next fall,” her mother added.
Kailia was also interested in aviation and had spoken of her desire to gain a commercial pilot’s license.
She had performed with Cirque du Soleil and had a role in the 2018 Netflix film Eli.
Her loved ones have flocked to social media to post messages of condolence and shock.
“Can’t even believe this has happened,”America’s Got Talent magician Kadan Rockett wrote beneath Kailia’s last Instagram post, which shows her posing on a staircase.
“I’m praying for you guys to get through this. She always was so kind to all of us. Rest In Peace.”
