The Rasmus – “Jezebel” (Finland Eurovision 2022)

Review: The Rasmus – “Jezebel”

They should: The Rasmus are tried, tested and know what they’re doing. With sales in excess of five million records and a solid catalog of nine hit albums, having them in the Eurovision landscape is a blessing. Their song “Jezebel” salutes the original biblical troublemaker. She’s a fierce rebel that’s set to take the continent by storm. With infectious hooks, a rock edge and the noughties nostalgia, this is destined to be one of 2022’s most memorable entries.

score: 8.5

Oliver: There’s a lot to love about The Rasmus. A tonal shift from their competitors with retro sounds and visuals pulled from gritty anti-hero DC comics, their efforts to spark the emo renaissance don’t go unnoticed. But while great in theory, “Jezebel” is sloppy in execution. The phrasing and meter of the chorus is off-putting, the transition from verse to chorus is jarring, and the lyrics push way too deep into try-hard edgelord territory. Elsewhere, the track sounds overcrowded, with none of the instruments or vocals having their own space to shine within the mix. Qualification is likely, but Finland shouldn’t rest on its laurels.

score: 3

William: “Jezebel” is a classic pop-rock number with an accessible theme and an easy-on-the-ears chorus. As a studio cut it’s safe and somewhat middle-of-the-road. But live The Rasmus work their magic to create something in-your-face and memorable — you feel like you’re at a real rock concert. Channeling the Biblical troublemaker and serving her naughtiness and edge of it, the stage becomes a vehicle on which they can really slay. Depending on how hard they go this could really surprise on the scoreboard.

score: 7

Angus: Finland’s entry feels curiously tame for a glam rock number and perhaps more worryingly does precious little to encourage enthusiastic headbanging, which is surely one of the best measures of a strong rock entry. That said, it does at least have a great narrative going for it and what is certain is that The Rasmus will deliver a visually arresting performance. One just wishes the live performance would have been matched to a better song in the first place.

score: 3

Antranig: Never has there been a song I want to like more than I want to like “Jezebel”, but it doesn’t live up to its potential. Musically, the song is brilliantly constructed. The Rasmus have great stage presence and can really sell this package in a live performance. My issue with “Jezebel” is the lyrics – the message of the song, in places, is incoherent and poorly constructed. It’s almost as though someone threw a dictionary into a blender, picked out some of the scraps and tried to turn them into sentences. The Rasmus are an incredible addition to the Eurovision family, yet I can’t help but want more from their song.
