El Muerto Starring Bad Bunny

Sony officially announces a new Marvel movie is coming to theaters in 2024, as Bad Bunny will star in El Muerto, a wrestling Spider-Man villain.

Sony Pictures has announced its first Marvel movie with a Latino lead, as rapper/actor Bad Bunny will star in The dead. after rebooting Spider-Man as part of the Marvel Cinematic UniverseSony has worked to find other Marvel movies to make using the hundreds of comic characters it has access to. Venom starring Tom Hardy was the beginning of this quest in 2018, which has since seen a sequel come out, followed by Jared Leto’s Morbius. These movies are just the beginning of Sony’s plans for its own Marvel universe starring Spider-Man villains and supporting characters.

The current slate of movies for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has multiple projects officially dated for theatrical release dates, starting with Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter in early 2023. The study also recently confirmed that madam web starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney will also hit theaters in the summer of 2023. Now, Sony has confirmed its intention to make another Marvel movie, one centered around El Muerto. As part of Sony’s CinemaCon panel that Screen Rant attended, the studio announced that rapper/actor Bad Bunny will star as the Spider-Man villain, who is also a wrestler. The dead is set to debut in theaters on January 12, 2024. Bad Bunny shared a brief statement about the casting at the panel:

The character of El Muerto is not someone that general audiences will know about, as even die-hard Marvel Comics readers might not recognize this deep-cut pull. Juan-Carlos Sanchez aka El Muerto is a man who has super strength thanks to a mystical mask that is passed down throughout his family from him. While he initially wants to avoid this path of life, the death of his father leaves Sanchez on a path to become El Muerto, which includes a brief wrestling match with Spider-Man. The character has only appeared in two comics to this point.

Although El Muerto might not be a Marvel character, most fans were hoping to see lead to a solo film, it is a role that reportedly attracted Bad Bunny. Not only will he become the first Latino character to lead a live-action Marvel movie, but Bad Bunny is also a wrestler in real life. It comes after he’s reportedly delivered a scene-stealing performance in Bullet Train for Sony, so it makes sense that they’d want to keep Bad Bunny around. The dead does not yet have a writer or director officially attached, but that will have to change relatively soon ahead of a 2024 release date.
